Starting the Day Right
I've been trying to catch up with friends whom I haven't seen for some time, and one of my favorite ways to do that is over a meal out. Today I met L and MM at the Mount Bakery Cafe, Creperie, and Scratch Bakery downtown for a late breakfast.
We all wanted crepes, but after the indulgence of the past week -- which included a totally decadent Belgian chocolate truffle cake from Mount Bakery for my birthday -- I chose the one made from fresh apples and pears, sliced into matchsticks. The softened Brie melted over the fruit beautifully. And I had the roast potatoes, of course.
That may sound pretty decadent, but L's crepe filled with sausage, Swiss cheese, two scrambled eggs, and caramelized onion marmalade made mine look very tame! MM's was somewhere in between, with two eggs, herbs, Swiss Emmental cheese, and sausage. And I did bring half of my meal home for Phil to enjoy for lunch!
Later, I went to the Community Food Co-op for a few items, and of course came home with several things that were not on my list. One of them, a new deli salad made of chopped kale, chopped apples, shredded carrot, blue cheese crumbles, walnuts, Greek yogurt, and touch of honey was particularly delicious, and I'm going to try to replicate that at home. Even Phil, who is not a kale lover like me, enjoyed it! Almost anything tastes better with blue cheese on it...
