Quartz and slate

The harbour at Newport Pembrokeshire is lined with old houses which stand only yards back from the edge, leaving just enough room for a paved path to run along the whole length of the sea wall. It twists and turns, swoops down to a little bay at one point and transforms into a flight of steps leading right on to the sand at another. Most houses lay claim to a tiny walled enclosure for sitting out, others just a slate seat where once the old salts would have leaned over to appraise the maritime comings and goings in the harbour as they puffed on their pipes.
Nowadays it's busy here only with summer holiday makers; nautical activities are confined to leisure craft. But at high tide the sea still laps the old harbour wall which as you can see here is decorated, Pembrokeshire style, with bright white quartz stones and pebbles. Besides being an attractive feature this makes the job of finding your way home after a dark a good deal easier in the absence of street lights.
