Octogon House - Hackettstown NJ
The Octogon house was built in 1859 by Joseph Rice who was the Postmaster at the time. It resides on Washington Street and is Brick with a one story porch that encircles the house.
A bit of history......Obadiah Ayers came to America from Aberdeen, Scotland in 1754, and purchased 1200 acres in the Musconetcong Valley, and was one of the earliest known settlers in the area. However, it was due to the influence of the Hackett family, that the area would eventually be known as Hackettstown.
The Ayers and Hackett families were joined, over the years, by families named Everitt, Hazen, Moore, Rusling, Sharp, Stiger, Valentine and others.
To this day, descendants of many of these families remain in Hackettstown and the surrounding area and many of the streets are named after them.
And you can roam through the local cemetery (captured on 2-19) and also see those names on many of the gravestones.
I thought that processing it in the antique plate might offer a look back in time (of course ruined by the modern car in the drive ;).
