Journeys day by day

Mr. Dee

Introducing Mr. Dee. A relaxing day at home, a fire in the wood stove which made it so hot I had to open up my windows, which in turn made it possible to hear all the birds that made my backyard home today. The chickadees aren't the only ones using the window feeder, the siskins and Mr. Townsend seem to like it as well, I have one photo of a siskin doing their laying feeding thing they do. I have learned a lot about the siskins watching them today, they are quite bossy and territorial. If another bird tries to come near their feeding spot, the go low and flap their wings, looking like they're making a hissing noise. I watched one do that earlier this morning and actually chase a Varied Thrush out of the feeder. Now, Pine Siskins are the smallest member of the American finch family, and a Varied Thrush is just a tad larger than a robin. It was like a Mini Cooper taking on a bus, but the siskin WON and sat happily in the feeder munching away. It was a very active day, and I even had a house sparrow stop by for a visit, the first one I've seen in my backyard. Mating time should be soon as I've heard the Flickers whinnying all weekend, and the Chickadees started their "Fi Fi" thing. I sure hope the Townsend's brings a girlfriend by soon, he's been here by himself all winter.

In other news, stew's in the slow cooker, did a little house cleaning and washing sapphire gravel today. Will call soon to find out if I have to show up for jury duty tomorrow.

p.s. in case you're wondering, this is his "hmm, should I take that black oil sunflower seed, or this one over here" face.
