Between fen and mountains

The steps

Whitby is my sort of place. Its streets and alleys are redolent of the labour and enterprise of generation upon generation. Its history is tangible at every turn, ecclesiastical, maritime, literary and industrial. Here in microcosm is a fair representation of the best that men and women have achieved; the Abbey, the memorial to Captain Cook, the Whale bone arch, the literary heritage of Bram Stoker and Dracula all speak of collective endeavour and imagination.

These steps lead to the church of St Mary. They have been rebuilt many times and in the church, the most recent restoration is described, funded by sponsorship and the dedication of individual steps. The book in the church is a poignant reminder of each step's memorial. Many stories are told, some serene, some tragic. The lower steps show the wear of centuries. Nothing endures except perhaps the spirit of this place.
