Booking Hall, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Mumbai
Formerly the Victoria Terminus and Headquarters of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, Shivaji Terminus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The station was designed by Frederick William Stevens and opened on the date of Quenn Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. It is in a very Indian Gothic with echoes of Indian Palaces and St Pancras Station in London. In front of the main entrance are a Lion for England and a Tiger for India.
Rather than dramatic photographs of the exterior, here is a lesser known interior image. This is the Booking Hall in the North Wing, which is known as the Star Chamber. It is decorated with Italian marble and polished Indian blue stone, and the arches have carved foliage and grotesque figures.
