I finally understood what the paradox of participation is. I have a book on it, it's very good, has some excellent essays, but it didn't really explain it clearly. It took a paper about a failed study to actually spell it out.

This paradox is used by people as a way of critcising participatory research but this sort of anti movement seems to be a bit melodramatic. Maybe there's more to it.

This discovery has changed my thinking and given me a new idea for the paper I'm working on and my expectations of the research I plan for my PhD.

It's needed a bit of time and distance for me to work on this paper in this way.
