Evening all.
Indirectly, Radio 4 and 'the Last of the Summer Wine' are responsible for this blip.
I was fascinated to learn (via radio 4) about the length and number of tunnels that are under Paris.
Not just the ones that people are familiar with and have access to, but the illeagal dangerous, secret places that are only ventured into by the brave or the foolhardy.
New entrances to the tunnels are turning up everyday apparently, in crumbling cellars and basements, and although the authorities are keen to fill the whole latticework of tunnels with cement, the cost and the difficulties involved make it an unrealistic proposition.
These aren't just tunnels to nowhere, they have been used by the military in times of war, some lead to the catacombs, others to whole undiscovered buildings, a cinema was discovered underground less than a decade ago...
it is a whole underworld populated mainly by the adventurous and the bold, with little criminal damage caused, although an arm of the Paris police is dedicated to the tunnels....
and now i need to go to see this wonder for myself, nevermind legality or danger, i can hear it calling to my inner adolescent romantic self.
Which reminds me of a scene in Last of the Summer Wine, when the old women are talking in the cafe...
IVY: ' The problem with men is;whatever age they say they are, you know inside they're really all twelve."
NORA: (nods head in agreement) 'thats true, apart fron the ones who are eleven!"
off to get my map of mysteries for 12 year olds!
