Making English Fun

Creativity is a requirement for a good language teacher. When these kids walked into the community center, I had no idea what we were going to do with them. We're still getting a schedule set and seeing who will be coming, so in the future there will be more of a plan, but for now we're doing things "Thai style" which equals "very flexible."

"Do you want to play a game or learn grammar?"
"A game."
Of course, which kid would choose to "learn grammar." Little did they know, there was only one option and it included both things. :) Hehe...so sneaky.

We played Doodle Dice, a game where you role dice to make the shape given on the card. Each shape is named something appropriate, like "elephant," "canoe," or "umbrella." The students had to read the word and write a sentence using it before rolling the dice to make the shape. To make things more fun, we wrote the sentences on the table with whiteboard markers and practiced grammar, new verbs, and vocabulary along the way.

Some of the more interesting cards to explain were "rub-a-dub-dub" and "Marco Polo." We got the general idea across though.
