world in a grain of sand

philanthropy

This drinking fountain was provided for the people of Charlbury by a kind Victorian patron. My own village, clearly humbler simply has a tap! The tap is still there, and requires a huge retaining wall to prevent the earth bank behind it from collapsing.
Charlbury's fountain is found at the Playing Close, "playing" was bullbaiting or dog and cock fighting - strange to think that these were and for some people still are thought of as entertainment and fun. Also strange to think that globalisation means we can ignore the need for clean piped water that still blights so many lives, because unlike those Victorian philanthropists we never have to see those in need.
on a photographical rather than moralising note, I was sad that there seemed to be no angle from which to take this shot without including a car.
