The Big Man's Claymore
The Claidheamh mòr or Claymore is the Scottish great sword. The name has been occasionally given to the basket hilted broadsword which is a single-handed weapon and much smaller that the four-foot plus claymore.
The photo above was taken at the National Wallace Monument which we visited today and had to struggle against a very stiff breeze which made steady photography tricky.
The 15th century poet, Blind Harry, would have us believe that The Wallace was a very big man, both tall and broad, and so he would easily be able to manage such a huge blade.
His main adversary, Edward I, ("Longshanks") was no great lover of the Scots and was probably the primary cause of the centuries of ill-feeling and suspicion between the peoples of North and south Britain.
On a happier note, we had a visit this afternoon from the birthday Boy, Euan with Ali and Phil as well. The wee soul is loaded with the cold at the moment but still raised a big smile for his grandparents.
Happy First Birthday, Euan!
