King-Thorpe House (1890)

This is a Queen Anne style house with pointed roof and finial. The original owners were Mary and Charles King. King was a confederate veteran and owner of a naval stores business. The house was a social center when the Kings lived here. They had theatrical, political and social programs regularly. In 1892, there was an amateur performance of The Mouse Trap. Admission was 25 cents. This is not the Agatha Christie version that is so long-running in England. It was a comical farce from 1899 by William Dean Howells, a contemporary of Mark Twain.

The house was sold in 1904 to William Bennett Thorpe of Rocky Mount, NC.
