Don't Stand in my Light

Nottingham Castle and Rock

This is Nottingham Castle sitting atop a 130' outcrop of natural sandstone, known as Castle Rock. The sandstone stretches subterraneanly across a large part of the city and is riddled with man-made caves, some of them medieval or earlier. They were used for all sorts of things, like dungeons, tanneries, cess-pits etc and were utilised as air-raid shelters in WW2.

When I was a member of the gainfully employed, my factory was built on top of some of these caves and it took five years to get permission to build an extension on to back of the building. We had no access to them, otherwise I would have been tempted to fill the bally things in.
