4 Crosses

4 crosses on the roof of the 13th century church in the heart of Buxted Park (St Margaret the Queen).

The church used to be at the centre of the village, although the village is now a mile or so away the other side of the river. This came about in the 1800's as a result of the actions of Lord Liverpool, who took ownership of the country house at Buxted Park and wanted to expand his estate. He offered to build the villagers new homes if they would go quietly, but being Sussex folk they "would not be druv" and said NO. Consequently he refused to do any repairs or maintenance on the houses which eventually fell into disrepair and by 1836 there was no trace of the village on this site. It's a sorry tale of bullying and neglect which you can read about here if you are interested.

Anyway, we are left with a beautiful building in a stunning setting. Today was such a lovely day I took loads of photos and struggled to decide which to blip.

I chose this one because I liked the shapes an angles of the roofs and the spire. I also like the mixture of materials; the stone of the church walls, the cedar shingles and lead flashing of the spire, the clay tiles on the roof and the glass of the windows. Also I had never really noticed this view of the church until today, even though I walk in Buxted Park most days.

These were the others, all of which I like too :

a crow sitting on one of the crosses

Moody one of some of the graves under the yew tree which is over 2000 years old.

lovely terracotta tiles on the church roof.
