Our bathroom door had a heavy black hook and eye lock and when grandchildren and others who live their lives at 100 mph use the loo, they exit by unhooking the lock(naturally) and charging out.

The noise of the hook rattling is like a machine gun burst.

I've now replaced the offending mechanism with a "gentle" wire hook and eye. I had to put in a wooden spacer however.

Only problem is : I'll now have to re-paint the WHOLE door and frame because touching-up the new stuff highlights how tired the rest of the door-paint is.

Moral of the story (as ever!) : If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
