Winter Aconites

Here are the last of the winter aconites at my mother's house. They've always been the first flowers to appear in her garden in spring.

Their other name is Eranthis and apparently...

In Greek and Roman mythology, Medea tried to kill Theseus by poisoning him by putting aconite in his wine, in that culture thought to be the saliva of Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guarded the Underworld. Wikipedia

Well, this is new to me!
I love these little yellow flowers and I'm pleased to say that the ones we transplanted to my garden last month seem to be doing well. I'm hoping they'll spread over the next few years and give as welcome a display as in their old home.
