The founder of the SAS .........
............ stands proud on the B824 connecting Doune with M9 at Dunblane.
Colonel Sir (Archibald) David Stirling DSO, DFC, OBE, founded the Special Air Services in July 1941.
Stirling often led his SAS units from the front but these hit-and-run operations eventually proved his undoing and he was captured by the Germans in January 1943. He escaped and was recaptured and after a further four escape attempts was sent to Colditz where he remained for the duration of the war. After the war he resumed duties as Commander of the SAS, serving in Norway and the Far East.
David Stirling received a knighthood in the New Years Honours list of 1990 and died later the same year aged 74.
In the mid distance can be seen the snow covered Stuc a' Chroin with Ben Vorlichon it's right, just under the flapping hemline of the statue's coat. Beyond and to the right is the windmill farm at Braes of Doune.
Definately worth a visit if you're ever passing through!
