Homespun Charms

By MaryMouse

Work in progress.

For a number of years I was a daily visitor to this neibouring house. An elderly lady lived there and we walked her dogs and offered support as she gradually became more infirm. We became very fond of her and she was able to tell such stories of her life including time spent during the war when she drove staff officers around London. The house is large and rambling and little had been done to keep up with the times. It was iterally a time warp, the kitchen was straight out of the 1930's, bells to call the servants in times past hung on the kitchen wall and thankfully, I'm pleased to say they still do!
When she eventually died we were delighted to have a young family take over. In a year they have done so much work including vital re-wiring, re-roofing and timber treatment.
I was invited round this afternoon to inspect the re-furbishment so far and to look at the plans (over a cup of tea of course). It's wonderful to see the enthusiasm and energy going into making this lovely house a family home with an eye to appreciating the odd, old features it contains. A well has been uncovered in the area of the foundations to the extension and this is going to be made a feature of the room that is being built. As I left I took this shot of the back of the house where 'it is all happening'. Wonder what N. would have made of it, I think she might well be very pleased.
