Icewine.
We had a wonderful evening on Saturday at our friends house.
There were six of us and we laughed all evening.
Had a lovely meal, Starter of hot chilli prawns, then roast duck, lovely cheese platter, followed by red currant flan.
Didn't over do the wine as we were out walking Sunday. Got home about 1am.
We had a white New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc , followed by red Southern French, then a red Italian (can't remember what these two were) but the star of the evening was this sweet wine. Absolutely stunning!
It was given to our friends before Christmas, by her sister who lives in Canada, and had come over to stay for a few weeks.
The sister's daughter and family come from the part of Canada where this wine was made.
The wine is called an Icewine, because it is made with grapes frozen on the vines.
The vineyard is in the Okanagan Valley,British Columbia, Canada.
Jackson-Triggs, 2008 Proprietors' Edition, Okanagan Estate,Riesling Icewine.
(It is made from the Riesling grape.)
Following notes on the back label:-
Harvested on the 1st january 2008,the naturally frozen grapes were pressed at an average of -11C, thus enhancing the varietal's sweetness and aromatic flavours.
The exquisite bouquet is richly textured with aromas of fresh apple, peach and tropical fruit.
Bold fruit flavours balanced by fine acidity caress the palate and conclude with a luscious, silky finish.
Serve slightly chilled on its own, with fresh fruit, foie gras or pate, poached pears, or Roquefort cheese.
We love sweet wines with dessert, or on their own as an aperitif.
This is one of the best I have tasted.
Unfortunately I don't think it is available in this country, but there are similar ones you can buy.
If you like wine, try icewine. You might just like it!
(Oh and the alcohol content is only 9.5%!)
