The Peastacks

Saturday
This morning we went on a tour round Castle Cornet in St. Peter Port. Although I have been to Guernsey several times, Roger had never taken me to Castle Cornet. The first castle was built in the mid 13th century as an English stronghold. It was built on a rocky tidal islet at the entrance to St Peter Port harbor. It underwent various modifications in medieval times. During the Civil War Castle Cornet under the Governor Peter Osborne remained loyal to the King, whereas Guernsey supported the Parliamentarians, and so the Castle was under siege for nearly nine years. The castle underwent some further modifications at the hands of the Germans when they occupied the islands during World War II.

We had lunch at the Castle, then explored St. Peter Port in the afternoon, then later on went for a walk along the cliffs from the hotel, when I took this shot. The entire south coast is scenery such as this, with breathtaking views from the cliffs and occasional little sandy bays. I wish we'd had more times so we could have walked more.
