Another Place

Today is our wedding anniversary. Cryno and I have been married for 6 years..

So it was appropriate that we went to Crosby beach with Gabriel, Poppy, Sill, Doom and Howie to see the ironmen as iron represents the sixth wedding anniversary...

Another Place is 100 cast-iron, life-size figures distributed along two miles of the beach. It took three weeks to lift the figures into place and drive them into the beach on metre-high foundation piles.

Each figure weighs 650 kilos - They are made from casts of the artist's own body and are shown looking out to sea, staring at the horizon in silent expectation.

The work is seen as a poetic response to the individual and universal sentiments associated with emigration - sadness at leaving, but the hope of a new future in another place.

The artwork is being exhibited in the UK for the first time. It has been previously been seen in Cruxhaven in Germany, Stavanger in Norway and De Panne in Belgium. In November 2006 the statues were expected to move to New York but after a successful appeal they will now permanently remain. The artist Anthony Gormley sees the present location as the perfect environment for the statues and he is pleased that they are here to stay..
