Remember...This...Face....
It's 3 hours and 50 minutes, 2 brick walls, 3 power gels, several water stops, numerous banana stumps, arms being grabbed by locals, rising heat of running!
Boom!
It is with pleasure that I can announce the succesful completion of the Luxor Marathon. To be honest, I'd built it up to be worse than it eventually was. My prep was solid and it really hepled me.
1-20 km went without any issues. Between 20 and 30 I made the mistake of keeping pace with a strong female runner, whist at the same time calculating the points at which I was going to use my power gels. I decided that 30, 35 and 40 km were ideal points for a boost. Needless to say, the combination of these factors saw me hit a very convincing,'why don't you just pretend you hurt your ankle and stop!' brick wall by 28km.
I struggled through to 30 and then had a power gel, a couple of lumps of banana and 3 cups of water. Between 30 and 37 km it felt as though I'd injected red bull into my veins. I literally floated at pace and with relative ease. The second gel, at 35km topping up the feeling.
Ouch! At 37km I hit a different brick wall. This one didn't even have the energy to muster a voice. It was the perfect collision of two desperate iventualitites. I had about 5km to go and I simply had the finish.
Remember this face. It's 3 hours and 50 minutes, 2 brick walls, 3 power gels, several water stops, numerous banana stumps, arms being grabbed by locals, rising heat of running!
