A Bit of History
Morris Canal Trail - Waterloo Road
The Morris Canal was a series of water driven incline planes that carried coal from Phillipsburg, NJ to Jersey City, NJ (107 miles) for a century from the 1820's - 1920's. It was considered an engineering marval of its time.
Several of the artifacts from the Canal remain as historical landmarks in NW NJ. This site is a trail marking where the canal originally crossed on its long journey eastward.
The canal became obsolete with the advent of the railroad.
I thought it would be appropriate to illustrate it in a sepia antique plate.
