The Numberer

At first, his "just a number" joy was almost overwhelming. After years of living under the influence of numbers, the relief was immense; what he felt, in a word, was free.

Often, it was all he could do to st0p himself laughing out loud.

Not that laughing in the street would have been any odder than his previous obsession, he reflected. For he could now see his compulsion for what it was, something that had made it almost impossible to enjoy life - to simply be.

As the days and weeks went by, and he felt no need to count out the numbers in his head, it was like permanently being on holiday.

But even the most wonderful holiday can become routine.

And one day, he looked at the meaningless numbers with a sense of longing.
