Dusk in Newcastle
Went to Newcastle today. Bit of shopping and a bit of banking business. It was quite cold and rainy. A real grey day.
I was on my way to catch the bus home when I realised I had forgotten to take a blip photo. So I just stood in the street and looked around for a shot.
Really too dark for my camera to take a good shot so photo isn't very good but in the distance you can see The Laing Art Gallery - the building with the domed top. Couldn't walk any nearer or I would have missed the bus.
The Laing Art Gallery was opened in 1904. It holds oil paintings, watercolours and Newcastle silver. In the early 1880s, Newcastle was the greatest glass producer in the world and enamelled glasses by William Beilby are on view along with ceramics (including Maling pottery), and diverse contemporary works by emerging UK artists. It has a programme of regularly rotating exhibitions and has free entry.
The gallery has an extensive collection of paintings by John Martin, including the dramatic "The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah", as well as important works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, , Holman Hunt , Ben Nicholson and others. There is also an extensive collection of 18th- and 19th-century watercolours and drawings, including works by Turner. It is well worth a visit.
Bobby continues to improve - eating well and starting to groom himself today. He doesn't seem bothered about going outdoors - I think he realises he isn't well enough to venture out.
We have an appointment at the local vets tomorrow morning so we will see what she says. Hope everything will be OK.
