canal du midi

Completed in 1681, the Canal du Midi connects the Garonne River to the Etang de Thau (were we scoffed lots of seafood on Sunday) and Mediterranean Sea. Along with the Canal de Garonne the 240km canal connects the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and shortened dramatically 17th century sea voyages around then hostile Spain and waters brimming with pirates.

This stretch of the Canal passes through the very pretty village of Poilhes where today we had lunch at La Tour Sarrasine, and my what a lunch. Foie Gras, profiteroles filled with escargots and that was just for starters.

I feel a serious need for a non eat week!
