Moving Sticks

Today was an awful day for me.

I was in school working and someone stole my wallet which had in my bank card, drivers licence and id. Loosing something like this in Africa is not the same as loosing it in England as there are not police that can help and basically I would never get it back and my id would be being used somewhere in the deep bushlands!! Anyway, this caused uproar in school. There were arguments and all sorts going on. I am by the way, pleased to say I got my wallet back with nothing missing. It was found under a table in one of the classrooms. Myself the head, deputy and administrator are all 100% it wasn't a student, which is disappointing and unfortunate as that means it must have been a member of staff.

Two of the staff went off to visit the Maribu or witch doctor (now I don't agree with this at all but it is their culture and I can't stop them) where they collected two sticks. The sticks are placed between two people as shown in the picture and the Islamic teacher says a name of a person and reads some of the Quaran. If that person is non guilty the sticks stay still. If the person is guilty the sticks move together.

Actually found it interesting and was waiting to see if it worked as they said they would trust the sticks 100%.

Unfortunately the sticks didn't move at all.
