At 0546 on Tuesday, January 17th, 1995, the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake struck. This terrible event will never be forgotten and the thousands of people who lost their lives will always be remembered. One particularly poignant way of honouring the victims is through the building of snowmen on the steps of the park beside Kobe City Hall. These snowmen symbolise both the frozen moment, etched in the memories of those who experienced the earthquake, as well as the awareness, as the candles burn and the snowmen melt, that time flows on and life, both old and new, continues.
