Leeds - Liverpool canal Bingley
We went for our morning walk down to the canal tow path in Bingley as they were starting work today on cleaning out and replacing some of the lock gates at the Five Rise Locks. The locks, together with the nearby 3 rise, were opened in 1774 and the 5 rise, consisting of 5 lock gates, has the steepest incline of any locks in the country.
Work was starting - as you can see here
and here
and we did sneak a closer look through some gates before getting shouted at.
There are to be open days on the 28th and 29th of January for anyone interested.
We walked on to the bridge leading to East Morton before turning back and had the treat of seeing the sun rising on this very frosty morning. Patches of the canal had a thin veneer of frost but as you can see here the unfrozen water produced quite nice reflections.
