The Lundy Eye

The Carter and his Horse

...is the name of this statue at Irvine Harbourside. It harks back to the time when Irvine was one of the most important and busy ports on the west of Scotland. And a place where crafts and trades which have long since disappeared once flourished.
A carter was someone who carried goods in a wagon, which was usually pulled by a horse.
Many carters worked on farms, others worked in busy towns or, like this chap, at harbours.
Just as a matter of interest, Irvine was where I was born quite a few years ago.
