OLD WINDMILL

Went to Health Centre this afternoon for the weekly bandage change on my left leg. Still painful so the nurse took a swab of ulcer to check if there was any infection. Will hear tomorrow if there is - or will not hear anything if there isn't.

On the way home I took a detour through the local park. Its a large park but there isn't too much there in the way of entertainment. A few play things for children, a basketball court, a tennis court and a bowling green. It is well maintained and there are lots of lovely trees and plants.

And this old windmill - which is thought to have stood for at least 300 years. It is made of coarse squared sandstone. The mound surrounds the Mill to a height of 5 feet from ground level.

It is referred to as a 'Tower Mill' and is the only mill still standing in the Gateshead area. It has also been referred to as a 'Palatine Windmill'.

The Mill was in use until 1835. Since then it has just stood derelict. Over the years there have been suggestions as to possible uses for The Mill - as a local history centre or to use the ground floor of the building as a refreshment kiosk - neither suggestion was developed so The Mill still stands unused today.
