Memorial

Evening all

Beautiful day today....sun was shining, blue skies, cold but gorgeous.

This memorial stands between Burntisland and Kinghorn for Alexander III, King of Scots. A good ruler by all accounts but his death left Scotland in turmoil (nothing new there then lol !! )
Travelling back from Edinburgh Castle after celebrating his second marriage, he was advised not to travel due to adverse weather conditions (in Scotland....never!!)......he came off his horse on a steep rocky embankment and died leaving no heir.....(nice one!!). This led to a dark period in Scottish history (we've had a few !!)....and would you believe....no honestly, you would never guess this.....want to try.......nope ..........here it comes....war with England!!! What a shocker......!!! Ye Olde Enemy lol !! ;0)

There is a mural on this Celtic cross with a plaque below commemorating his death. On the wall to the side of the memorial is an epitaph, have a look, it translates to :

When Alexander our King was dead,
that Scotland led in love and peace,
there ended all abundance of ale and
bread,
wine and wax, of gaming and of glee.
Our gold was changed into lead.
Christ, born into virginity,
Assist Scotland and cure
what is beset in perplexity [trouble].

Here endeth the history lesson lol ;0)

Have a great evening
