An unused gate

This is a gate at the side of Cardiff University's main building. I've never seen it open and I don't know what it would ever have been used for. Under the gate there is a slab that appears to have the letters PN and AN highlighted in moss. It's very intriguing. I think I need a Cardiff University historian to help unravel what this might be about.
