Grave of Harry Clasper
This is the grave of Harry Clasper which can be found in the churchyard of St Mary's Church in Whickham.
Harry Clasper (5 July 1812 - 12 July 1870) was born in Dunston and became a Tyneside professional rower and boat builder. He was an innovative boat designer who pioneered the development of the racing shell and the use of outriggers. He is said to have invented spoon-shaped oars.
He died on 12 July 1870, probably of a stroke. For his funeral, the coffin was transported from the Tunnel Inn, Ouseburn to St Mary's Church, Whickham. Part of the journey was by paddle tug on the river, travelling over part of the course that had seen so many of his triumphs. Many thousands watched the funeral procession and burial. This memorial monument was erected over his grave in St Mary's churchyard.
The wording on the monument reads:~~~
Beneath this monument reared to his memory by the ardent affection of friends and admirers from every class and from all parts of the kingdom and in the sacred spot commanding a full view of that noble river , the well loved scene of former triumphs, rest the mortal remains of HENRY ( HARRY ) CLASPER the accomplished oarsman and boatbuilder of Derwenthaugh who died July 12th 1870 aged 58 years.

Leg is much improved today. Still a bit fuzzy headed due to painkillers though. Might try to do without them tomorrow and then may not feel so sleepy.
