In 1991 Saddam Hussein fired SCUD missiles into Tel Aviv and Haifa in an attempt to bring Israel into the First Gulf War. Israelis slept in bomb shelters and "safe rooms". Recalling Saddam's use of poison gas against Kurdish civilian populations, Israelis were issued gas masks and taped their rooms shut. This gas mask hangs on the wall in my nephew's room still.
