Cribbed from the plinth: A tribute to the pioneers of Arizona and the southwest who trod this ground and braved the dangers of the Apaches and other warrior tribes.
And from the nearby tablet: This ten foot high,five ton sculpture cast by St Louis sculptor August Leimbach is one of twelve identical monuments to the bold spirit of the pioneers erected 1928-29 along the National Old Trails Road from Maryland to California.
