Life through the lens...

Top Withens

Our walk today took us from Haworth to Top Withens. (about 3 1/2 miles. from Haworth)
Up over the moors.
Dry and dull when we set off, but before we reached the old farm house it was drizzling and misty.
Just the sort of weather Emily Bronte would have been thinking of when she wrote "Wuthering Heights".

Top Withens is now in ruins(although they have tried to restore part of the walls with the most awful pointing.)
The farmhouse has been associated with Withering Heights the Earnshaw home in Emily Bronte's novel. The building even when complete bore no resemblance to the house she described, but the situation may have been in her mind when she wrote of the moorland setting of the Heights.

"Wuthering" is a local word meaning wild, exposed, storm-blown, and today it certainly was! There was no view because of the mist.

I thought this B&W( though more grey,) summed up the feel of the place.

However it was a great walk and when we got back to Haworth the drink in the pub, sat in front of a roaring log fire was appreciated all the more!
