very early signs of life

my dad planted these crocuses outside our garden wall about 18 years ago. They always make me cheerful and make me think of him; but I don't think I've ever seen them flower so early before.
There's something about planting bulbs on a cold, wet, inhospitable autumn day that comes back to me when I see them flower!
