Infinite Variation

Crocus sieberi subspecies sieberi

The forms of Crocus sieberi from Crete are usually white inside but have infinite variation in the purple markings that adorn the outer three petals. I'll try and show a few more soon.

In the wild it grows in high mountain meadows and rocky places where it can be found in flower from February to June, flowering soon after the winter snow melts. Follow this link for pictures from the mountains in Crete

The flower in my pic is at a jaunty angle after a battering from the high winds recently.
