Moulton Packhorse Bridge and village pump

I have had a busy day visiting friends in the village and catching up with e-mails. I am going to start re-caning a chair tomorrow so wanted to get ahead with things.

Walking round the village this afternoon with the dog, I took a photo of our famous packhorse bridge and village pump. The pump was rebuilt at the village forge a few years ago. The blacksmith has a family business and there is an excellent example of his workmanship with a commemorative circular seat around a tree very near the pump.

The packhorse bridge is a rare four-arched 15th century bridge, which spanned the River Kennet, now little more than a stream. It is built of flint and stone and is very narrow and the parapets have been kept low to allow goods carried by mules and packhorses to overhang the bridge. There is also a flint footbridge of similar design further along the stream. In the summer there is a 'cork race' which is hugely popular and the corks are raced between both bridges.
