Start of something Big
Also known as 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'
The photo doesn't truely depict the size and enornminity of the situation....the hole itself measures 1 x 1.5 metres.....the outcome of this sink hole is like 10 metres by 10 metres....the carpark beside where this sinkhole is looks like a rollercoaster ride from Disneyland - all over the place with humps and turns and bumps. The carpark has been that way since February 22nd 2010 - this hole arrived from the quakes of December 23rd 2011. When you put your head into the whole to look at what's underneath........there is nothing holding up the road except for the tarseal itself, it drops one metre and is just a cavern of emptiness growing with every shake. There are lots of these all over the city, especially the East, who knows how many people could kill themselves by driving into one. Liquifiation rises to the surface and you wonder where it comes from, when you see the displacement of soil below these roads, you have an understanding- it raises the question of how many roads on the East side are totally dangerous and WHY are there no street works working to address this unseen insidious dangers. It begs the question as to why the Christchurch City Council did not have emergency staff rostered to work on the liquification and the sinkholes...oh yes, forgot, the CEO was on the Gold Coast spending his newly appointed salary increase of $75,000.
