Kumara sluice canon

This piece of engineering history sits on the main road in Kumara.
Kumara might not look much now as it is a through road with only a shop and art studio but in 1876 it became the scene of New Zealand's last gold rush with 50 pubs and thousands of people. It is also the birth place of Richard Seddon who became prime minister of NZ.
They did make one mistake when they were building Kumara, they built the town on top of land that hadn't been mined yet so there could be quite a lot of gold under people's houses.

This water gun was used to sluice the sides of the hills away so now the area is pretty flat except for one hill which isn't meant to have any gold in it.
