More Storms
Our plans to travel back down to Carradale today were scuppered by the overnight storm that ripped through the Central Belt of Scotland.
We awoke to find 2 fences at the side of the house in Renfrew destroyed by the winds. After clearing up the debris it was off to try and get some new fencing. However, Abbotsinch Retail Park was closed due to storm damage and plans to replace fence were put on hold. As I returned home via the centre of the Renfrew the extent of the damage became clearer. A number of trees were down and roof tiles littered the streets. The worst damage appeared to be in Canal Street where the westerly storm and high tide had caused the Clyde to back up and burst its banks. I spoke to an elderly gentleman who told me that at high tide (about 7.30 in the morning) the whole area was under water and many properties flooded.
The waters were receding when I took this blip in front of the Ferry Inn, with its sandbags still in place. The small ferry that still crosses the Clyde from the slipway just behind the railings was not running. The old man had joked that at high tide it could almost have reached Renfrew Cross via the aptly named and flooded Canal Street! The concern now is that the area will flood again on this evening's high tide.
With police advising not to travel unless necessary, we will wait until tomorrow before heading back to Carradale.
What a Winter it has been for win and rain. Oh for a few more dry frosty days!
