New Year's Day at Meiji Jingu Shrine

For Japanese, New Year's Day is not about nursing a hangover; it's about hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year, to pray for good luck in the year ahead. Meiji Jingu Shrine is a popular destination for Tokyo residents and I took this shot 30 minutes in to lining up. It took another ten or so minutes to enter the shrine itself.
