Ready... aim... water?

Pioneer Square, Seattle, WA

Ever try to fight fire with fire? It's not very effective. All you do is add more to the fire. It reminds me of when Jesus says:

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth' but I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you." (Matthew 5:38-42)

These are tough words to hear. It doesn't mean that the government and law enforcement shouldn't be involved in combating evil. Rather, he is talking about individual conduct and people's need to retaliate or seek revenge. When we "get back" at people we don't make the situation better. Oftentimes it gets worse. He is challenging us Christians to act in love towards hostility or people who take advantage of you. In return, not only will it dampen the fire, they may come to know Christ because of your kindness.
