A peaceful clash of cultures
Today we made our usual July trek to the ox roast and flea market in the rural Ohio community of Mesopotamia. Because Mesopotamia is largely an Amish community and many visitors come from outside the Amish culture, this ox roast is an interesting mix of traditions, reflecting both the Amish and and the non-Amish (known as the English) cultures. The sign in today's blip shows the location of Mesopotamia, Ohio in relation to its neighboring communities and the world at large. More pictures, illustrating the contrast in dress, transportation, facial hair, and related customs of the Amish and English, can be seen in this gallery.
