A Hardy Flower

A flowering Cale plant is a member of the Brassica oleracea family. The family tree includes regular cabbage (yech to both raw and cooked), broccoli (yummy), cauliflower (thumbs up to both raw and cooked), brussel sprouts (I'll eat one...two at the most), rutabagas (love them in my from-scratch pasties), and turnips (the jury is still out).

I shoudn't say I dislike all cabbage. I will eat 5-6 bites of cole slaw...but that is my limit. And...forget about the taste...just the smell of cooked cabbage makes me want to toss my cookies cabbage. The smell it produces (after digestion) at the other end is probably worth mentioning, too.

I never realized until looking it up on the internet that it was edible. I jumped back in my van, and returned to the church where I saw it. I wouldn't eat it, but I thought my wife might like it to go along with the steak and baked potatoes I am preparing.

I pulled in and looked around. Only one car in the parking lot...which I assume belonged to the secretary or the pastor. I delivered mail there, and I didn't think either of them could catch me. I took out the machete that I always keep in the van, and with a Samurai-sounding "HI-YAHHH!!!...lopped off the largest of the cabbage heads.

Since I am grilling the steaks...I'll cook the cale on a pot on the grill. That way...I don't have to smell it. They say it is much more bitter than regular cabbage. I won't tell my wife that little morsel of information. Stay tuned. Bon appetite.
