Ebony?

I bought this strange looking creature in Angola a fair few years ago, from a craftsman who assured me it was ebony. Even before I'd got it home I realised he must have meant it was ebony boot polish he'd used on the wood ;-) After some time on the window ledge, its true colour shone through. Its still a nice carving and I think it cost US$1 so I cant complain.
