Jar of coins

OK, it was a late night emergency blip ... a jar where I stash 1p coins.

Right, I'm meant to try and make this interesting, so here we go ...

We usually refer to the low value 1 and 2p coins as "coppers".

Here's something to try.

Find a magnet and find some 1p coins ... if the coin is post 1992 you will notice that it will stick to the magnet ... no, the properties of copper haven't changed. Since September 1992, these 1p coins have been made from copper plated steel ...

You can try the same trick with a 2p coin which was changed from bronze to copper-plated steel in 1998.

Oh and next month the 5p and 10p "silver" coins will cease to be minted from cupronickel and change to nickel plated steel.
