King of the Hill

And just when you think a trip can't get much better (see yesterdays light-mantled albatross), we put ashore early in the day at St Andrews Bay to have a look at the King Penguin colony beside the bay. The guides couldn't agree how many birds were at the colony - estimates ranged from 250,000 to 400,000 birds.

I'll eventually get the chance to post more pictures elsewhere that show the full extent of the colony. But I think the sight and sound of that many birds in one place is an image that I'll retain for a long time. This small group of King Penguins were on a rise in the ground on the edge of the colony enjoying the early summer warmth in South Georgia,
